Dateline, December 16, 2011. There is excitement in the air about the Village Ice Rink that we want to build. It will be located in Townsend Park just north of the creek near the trailhead of the Cannon Trail. However there is a minor glitch as of right now. WE NEED COLD TEMPERATURES. The response that we have received since the article came out in the December Chronicle has been tremendous. This is going to be a totally volunteer project and we are seeking volunteers for all phases of the ice rink...from the construction, to the maintenance, to the lighting (Especially the lighting). There's no electric in that area of the park. So here's a challenge to everyone from students, to companies, can we come up with an alternative power and lighting source so it can be lit at night. This rink will remind many of some of the great rinks in Grand Rapids; Valley Field, Richmond Park, John Ball Park, just to name a few, where families skated together, first dates held hands, pick up hockey games were contested as hotly as the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or Mr. Zinkowski, who would just go for a skate in his old Mackinaw coat with the smoke of his curved pipe trailing behind him. Weather permitting the ice rink will be the focal point of the winter carnival that will be held on February 11, 2012. If you would like to volunteer on any aspect of this project contact Don at don@honeycreekinn.com or call him at 616-874-7849. This will be a great addition to the village and Cannon Township.
HONEY CREEK INN PRESENTS:
Ralph T. Moose's 1st Annual Winterfest
This all day event will take place Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Townsend Park. One way or the other this event is on like Donkey Kong. Now we have a little catch as of the time this article is being composed. Old Man Winter is down in the Jamaica with the Rastafarian's eating jerk
chicken, laying on the beach, and listening to Jimmy Buffett music. Old Man Winter, you are done with your vacation already! Get back here and give us some winter! Be it warm temps or cold this event will be a blast.
Scheduled events are:
A Cyclecross bike race: This event is going to happen either way.
Broom ball: On the ice rink or in the grass.
Snow sculptures: We would like groups to get together and do a sculpture. We are also looking for Michigan Tech alumni to create a large likeness of Ralph.
Snowshoeing: We will have a snowshoe race and we are in the works to have some companies out so that anyone can demo some snowshoes.
Ice Skating For All: Sharpen up those blades or go out and get some. We are going to need some cooperation from Mother Nature on this one. Bring the family, bring a date, or come by yourself. There will be lots of skating for all if we can get the ice.
Curling: The sport that (other than ice hockey) put Canada on the map. We hope to bring curling to the rink that day. Whether it is a demonstration or where you can try the sport out. It will be loads of fun to slide the rock, broom the ice, and shout at winter's version of shuffle board. Interested? Contact Don at don@honeycreekinn.com. Put this date on your calendar for a great winter day!
